【Delete Me】Automatically sync Shopify customer email changes to Klaviyo

Email changes made in Shopify's new customer accounts now update your Klaviyo profiles automatically

What you'll learn

  • What a single email change does to your Klaviyo flows and segments
  • Why email changes in Shopify aren't reflected in Klaviyo automatically
  • How Delete Me's new "Klaviyo email change sync" works, and how to set it up
  • How your Klaviyo operations change before and after

Has your loyal customer become a "different person" in Klaviyo?

Imagine Customer A, who has shopped at your store for five years, changes their email address on their Shopify account page. That change is not reflected in their existing Klaviyo profile. Klaviyo ends up with two profiles, one for the old address and one for the new, and Customer A is split into "two people."

Old-address profile New-address profile
What it holds Five years of purchase and open history Starts from zero purchase history
Emails it receives A "We haven't seen you in a while" Winback flow, sent to an address no longer in use Drops out of the VIP segment and gets "Welcome, first-time shopper" emails
Result Undelivered emails and bounces increase, hurting deliverability Your most valued customer receives irrelevant emails

Winback is a Klaviyo flow that automatically emails customers who haven't purchased for a set period. Because orders placed with the new address are recorded on the new profile, the old profile is judged as "no recent purchases," and Customer A, who is still buying from you, gets a "Long time no see" email.

Neither profile can send Customer A the right email. And because this mismatch never shows up as an error in the admin, it quietly piles up without anyone noticing.

Why aren't email changes in Shopify reflected in Klaviyo?

In Klaviyo, the email address is the key used to identify and match customers. And customer data flows into Klaviyo not only from Shopify, but also from POS, membership systems, forms, other apps, and more.

So a change of email address in Shopify alone isn't necessarily a reason to overwrite or delete the address in Klaviyo, since it could conflict with information coming from other systems. Klaviyo on its own can't easily decide which change should win, so it does not automatically apply Shopify changes to existing profiles.

As a result, an email change in Shopify isn't reflected in the existing Klaviyo profile. Instead, a separate profile is created for the new address, and Klaviyo treats the same customer as two different profiles.

This is especially likely with Shopify's new customer accounts, which Shopify is moving all stores to. There, the email address itself is how customers sign in (it is the customer's identifier). Since customers can easily change their address from their account page, these mismatches happen more often.

  • Flows misfire: Winback, abandoned cart, post-purchase and other flows keep going to the old address
  • Segments lose accuracy: Order counts and lifetime spend are split between old and new, so customers fall out of VIP and repeat-buyer segments
  • Reports become unreliable: Open rate, CVR, LTV and other numbers drift from reality, making it hard to judge what's working
  • Wasted cost: Two profiles for the same customer inflate your billable profile count

Check your store if

  • You use Shopify's new customer accounts, or plan to move to them
  • You run flows or segments based on purchase history, such as Winback or VIP
  • Klaviyo has several profiles that seem to belong to the same customer

If any of these apply, email mismatches may already be happening.

You want your Klaviyo data to follow what customers do in Shopify. That is the role Delete Me plays.

Keep Klaviyo as it is, and let Delete Me sync only the changes that start in Shopify

Delete Me's new "Klaviyo email change sync" updates Klaviyo profiles based on what customers do in Shopify. When a customer changes their email address from their store profile, Delete Me automatically replaces that customer's old email address in Klaviyo with the new one. No more manual fixes in Klaviyo every time an address changes.

POINT01 Replace the address instead of creating a new profile

The old-address profile is updated to the new address. No extra profile is created, so you avoid having "the same customer twice."

POINT02 Keep the customer's full history

Only the address changes on the same profile, so purchase, open and other history stays intact. Orders placed with the new address are recorded on the same profile, so Winback emails won't be sent by mistake, and your flows and segments keep working correctly as before.

POINT03 Built for new customer accounts

Changes that customers make themselves from their account page are reflected automatically. You can keep running Klaviyo with confidence after moving to new customer accounts.

What changes with Delete Me

Without Delete Me With Delete Me
When an email changes Klaviyo treats them as a different person; the only fix is manual The old address is automatically replaced with the new one
Profiles Split into old and new, with duplicates piling up One customer, one profile
Flows and segments Emails go to the old address and customers drop out of VIP History carries over, and the right customer gets the right email
Operational effort Duplicates must be found and merged regularly Automatic once set up, with less checking needed

Set up in 3 steps

  • STEP1 Create an API key: In Klaviyo, go to Settings > Account > API keys and create a private API key
  • STEP2 Connect in Delete Me: In Delete Me, go to Settings → the Marketing platform integration tab, enter the API key, turn on Sync customer email changes, and save
  • STEP3 Check your Klaviyo settings: In Klaviyo, go to Integrations > Shopify > Sync settings and check the settings under To Shopify

Use it together with: keeping customer data from piling up

Alongside keeping data "accurate" with email change sync, keeping unused data from "piling up" is also important for running Klaviyo well. Delete Me can automatically delete inactive customers who haven't purchased for a set period, and can also remove customers from your Klaviyo audience when their information is deleted. Keeping data accurate and keeping it lean work together to keep your email base clean.

Use cases

  • Stores that have moved to new customer accounts: automatically prevent customer data mismatches caused by email changes
  • Stores running Winback or VIP flows: keep purchase-history-based targeting accurate
  • Cut the time spent finding and merging duplicate profiles, and spend it on your campaigns instead

Notes

  • This feature is available on the paid Autonomous and Optimize plans.
  • It applies to stores using new customer accounts, when a customer changes their email address from their store profile.
  • For setup steps and detailed specifications, please see the latest support article (in Japanese).

Final thoughts

Every Klaviyo campaign depends on one thing: the right email reaching the right customer. If the email address underneath drifts, even the most carefully built flows and segments can't do their job.

If you use Shopify and Klaviyo, turn on Delete Me's email change sync. Keep running Klaviyo as you do today, and changes made in Shopify will reach Klaviyo automatically.

Starting with Klaviyo email change sync, Delete Me will keep helping Shopify store owners manage customer data so it stays accurate and clean.
