Online Store 2.0 (OS 2.0)
Definition
Online Store 2.0 is Shopify's current-generation theme (design template) specification. It was announced at "Shopify Unite 2021" in late June 2021 and drew attention as the largest update in Shopify's history. Its standout feature is that design elements (sections/blocks) — previously usable only on pages like the homepage — can now be freely placed on any page, including products, collections, and blogs. It natively supports JSON templates, metafield integration, and App Blocks, enabling merchants to design stores freely with no-code tools, without depending on engineers.
Background
Under the older theme specification that predates OS2.0 (vintage themes), page layouts were fixed, and even minor changes required specialized coding. With the arrival of OS2.0, merchants gained the ability to manage pages quickly on their own, reduce operating costs, and improve site performance — and "OS2.0 compliance" is now a baseline requirement for theme quality.
- Practical considerations during migration
— When OS2.0 was first announced, a major question for existing stores was whether to fully rebuild on an OS2.0-compliant theme or manually upgrade to OS2.0. For stores that had been running for years in particular, the cost of porting over embedded custom business logic and external integrations became a real obstacle. However, because OS2.0 is designed to allow incremental upgrades on a per-file (per-template) basis, a practical approach spread of migrating page by page, starting with the most important ones, to keep risk contained. - An evolution still in progress (the future of Liquid)
— Although OS2.0 shifted the platform toward a JSON-driven structure, Shopify has now signaled a direction of re-evolving that structure toward a cleaner, "Liquid-driven" approach that's readable by both AI (agents) and developers. Guided by the idea that "a great developer experience is also a great AI experience," Shopify has entered a new phase aimed at resolving the structural complexity that built up along the way. Flagship's Involvement
At Flagship, we build stores that draw out the full potential of OS2.0. While Shopify theme development is built on standard web technologies at its core, it requires a deep, working knowledge of the platform's own constraints and best practices — such as the right scope for CMS-driven content and how to safeguard page speed. Drawing on our expertise as a Shopify-specialist agency, we support both efficient, performance-maximized new theme builds and the phased refactoring of existing themes. We also stay ahead of platform shifts like the recent move back toward Liquid, so we can deliver highly extensible store architectures that adapt readily to future updates.
