Shopify provides its own official email marketing tool, "Shopify Email," which at first glance suggests a structure where third-party marketing apps would be eliminated. However, Shopify has actually made a strategic investment of $100 million in Klaviyo, strongly backing the company as a "recommended marketing partner."
Furthermore, on the technical side, Shopify is advancing deep integration at the data layer, such as enabling the AI assistant "Sidekick" to refer to and analyze Klaviyo's marketing data and conversion results.
No Mercy for Low Quality, Maximum Respect for High Quality
What emerges from this example is the clear culture and philosophy of the Shopify platform.
Shopify ruthlessly drives first-partification and commoditization for "low-quality apps" that degrade store display speed or harm the customer experience, or "shallow functions made on a whim."
On the other hand, for third parties that elevate the value of the entire ecosystem with advanced domain knowledge and overwhelming product strength, it shows deep respect and chooses the path of "coexistence and partnership" through financial aid and advanced API integration.

With Shopify's promotion of first-partification and coexistence with excellent third parties, the structure of the ecosystem has become clear, and both businesses and developers are now required to have the discernment to identify "quality and sustainability."
For Merchants (Businesses): Three Criteria for Unfailing App Selection
In an era where thoughtless app additions directly lead to site slowdowns and problems, businesses must select apps based on the following perspectives:

This is a strategy to overcome the wave of first-partification by Shopify and continue to be a product chosen as a partner, like Klaviyo.
- From "independent tools" to "modules that extend the Shopify foundation" – Move away from a structure that holds and synchronizes data independently to a modern configuration that directly integrates with Shopify's unified data layer. Apps deeply fused with Shopify's functions will also resonate with Shopify's AI and become an "indispensable presence that won't be excluded" by the platform.
- Specialize in "complexity and domain knowledge" that Shopify itself won't touch – Shopify's in-house development focuses only on "broad but shallow features (MVP)" used by 80% of all merchants.
